Walkability, footpaths, bike routes

Walkability, bike routes, safety on footpaths and condition/construction of new footpaths were highlighted during community consultation. While these topics are not included in the Local Law, we know that streets that accommodate pedestrians and cyclists ensure that people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds can move easily and independently around the municipality. The priority given to walking, cycling and social interactions make our streets genuinely attractive places and contributes to the fabric of neighbourhoods and community. Enablement of people to walk or cycle more supports community resilience and transition to a low carbon mobility in response to climate change.

The Maroondah Principal Pedestrian Network and the Maroondah Bicycle Network guides the construction of an interconnected network of footpaths, bike paths, trails and pedestrian crossings. Investment in the networks continues with the maintenance of existing footpaths, bike paths and trails and building of new paths. Over time, the extended and better-connected network will increase capacity and allow greater mix of walk activities and bike types.

There is significant information on Council’s website about lodging individual requests about footpath maintenance and understanding if there is a footpath planned for your street. Find out more on Council's 'footpath' webpage.

    Scooters, e-scooters

There are provisions included in the Local Law that allow Council to declare or ban particular activities on Council land, or parts of Council land. As well as, ensuring the safe and enjoyable use of this land for all. Wheeled recreational devices and e-scooters on roads and footpaths are overseen by the VicRoads Road Rules and therefore not included in the Local Law. Find out more on VicRoads website.

    Street lighting

Council acknowledges that public and street lighting can improve people’s feeling of safety and the general amenity of the area. While it is not included in the Local Law, more information on Maroondah’s Public Lighting Policy can be found on Council's website.

    Parking

General car parking and traffic flow are covered by the Road Safety Road Rules legislation and not covered within the Local Law, if you have a specific concern about parking in your street, traffic or pedestrian safety please visit Council's 'parking' webpage, or contact Council on 1300 88 22 33, or email maroondah@maroondah.vic.gov.au

Council received significant feedback about having more education regarding recycling, organics and hardwaste. The introduction of the Waste Services Guidelines as a document incorporated by reference into the Local Law provides clear guidance as to what is or is not allowed in a household bin. The Waste webpage on Council's website also has lots of information about the do’s and don’ts of recycling, hard waste and more. Visit the 'waste and rubbish' webpage for more information.

    Nature strips

The area defined as a nature strip often houses important utilities and drainage infrastructure.  There are guidelines on naturestrip planting and maintaining the nature strip area.  Find out more on Council's 'nature strip planting' webpage.

    Wood smoke

Council currently follows the Environment Protection Act guidelines for managing complaints about woodsmoke from indoor heating and therefore has not included this in the Local Law. This information can be found at on the EPA website.
