Council is seeking your feedback on a proposed change to the existing speed limit in Ringwood Street, between Maroondah Highway and the Ringwood Bypass. It is proposed to reduce the speed limit from 60km/h to 40km/h to improve pedestrian and vehicle safety in this busy precinct.

Investigations, including onsite observations by Council Engineers, have noted the following:

  • Based on the past 5 years of VicRoads Crash Statistics, there have been three pedestrian injury related crashes on Ringwood Street.
  • During peak periods, Ringwood Street experiences a higher number of pedestrian crossings both at the designated signalled crossing and at other points along the street where there are no formal signalled crossings.
  • Based on VicRoads speed zoning guidelines a 40km speed zone is a practical application for a metropolitan activity centre.

Speed limits and speed signs are classed as Major Traffic Control items and fall under the jurisdiction and control of VicRoads. Subject to the feedback from the community, Council will seek VicRoads approval to reduce the speed limit on this section of Ringwood Street.

Reducing the speed limit also aligns with speed limit reductions specified by the Transport and Movement Priorities that forms part of the Ringwood Metropolitan Activity Centre Masterplan 2018 which was adopted by Council on 26 November 2018.
