What is the 20-minute Neighbourhood Pilot Program?

As part of Plan Melbourne 2017 – 2050 (Plan Melbourne), the Victorian government is partnering with the Heart Foundation, Victoria Walks, local governments, the private sector and communities to deliver a pilot program to develop a series of 20 minute neighbourhoods at three local government areas across Melbourne being, Brimbank, Moonee Valley and Maroondah.

The pilot program will be a Council led program funded through a grant from Department of Environment Land Water and Planning (DELWP). Whilst DELWP will oversee the pilot programs, Victoria Walks and the Heart Foundation will provide advice and assistance to Councils.

    What is a 20-minute neighbourhood?

A 20-minute neighbourhood is where residents can walk, cycle, ride or take local public transport to access most of their daily needs including shops, childcare and schools, parks, doctors and public transport, within a 20-minute journey from home.

What are the characteristics of a 20-minute neighbourhood?

We will be working with the local Croydon South community to identify neighbourhood strengths, local needs and opportunities for improvement. We want to understand places that need to be protected, how people can be better connected with local groups and services, and identify what neighbourhood enhancements are required.

Over the coming weeks, we will be out in the community chatting to residents who live, work and play in the Croydon/Croydon South neighbourhood, so that we can better understand the social, cultural and recreational opportunities; the built and natural environment; accessibility; safety; and learning opportunities.

Ultimately, the pilot program will assist Council in identifying future improvements and opportunities for the Croydon South neighbourhood.
