Support Council to establish a wildlife corridor (known as a biolink) along the Dandenong, Tarralla and Bungalook Creeks.
The biolink will enable native fauna to move along the creeks and into nearby areas, allowing more people in Maroondah to connect with nature as part of their daily lives.
In collaboration with key community and agency stakeholders, Council has developed a draft Dandenong-Tarralla-Bungalook Creeks Biolink Action Plan. The draft Action Plan presents proposed actions to help build and sustain the biolink as a functioning wildlife corridor, and to support our community in experiencing, learning about and caring for the biolink.
The document includes:
- a shared vision for the biolink
- seven focal fauna species and their shelter, food, breeding and threat reduction requirements
- a range of proposed actions that collectively are expected to meet those requirements
The Biolink
The Dandenong-Tarralla-Bungalook Creeks Biolink (DTB Biolink) applies to the sections of each of these three creeks within Maroondah.
- Dandenong Creek - Kilsyth South to Vermont
- Tarralla Creek - Kilsyth to Bayswater North
- Bungalook Creek - Kilsyth South to Croydon
The boundary extends approximately 50 metres either side of the creek and key habitat patches, into neighbouring residential, commercial and industrial areas. The biolink occurs within the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri-Woi Wurrung people.
What has led us to this point?
In 2021 a Deliberative Panel of 40 community members expressed strong support for improving habitat corridors and increasing biodiversity in Maroondah, as well as recognising the role that the natural environment plays in promoting economic and community wellbeing.
As a result, the Council Plan 2025-2029 includes the priority action “Develop and implement a series of Biolink Action Plans that implement the Maroondah Habitat Connectivity Plan.”
A key stakeholder group with 40 representatives from 20 different Council teams and government, business and community organisations have jointly developed the content of the Draft Dandenong-Tarralla-Bungalook Creeks Biolink Action Plan that is now being presented for community consultation.
In 2024 Council consulted on the Mullum Mullum Creek Biolink Action Plan 2025-2035, receiving strong community support for the project.
The focal species
Seven different animal species were selected to provide a focus for provision of habitat and other requirements. Creation of habitats that serve these species are also expected to serve the needs of a much wider range of species likely to inhabit or be attracted to the Maroondah area.
