Consultation has concluded
Consultation on the draft Maroondah Vegetation Strategy has now closed. We will provide further updates on this page as they become available.
Built on the base of evidence we have collected throughout the Maroondah Vegetation Review process - including information provided in the Issues and Options Paper, Fact Sheets, expert studies, and also feedback received from our community and stakeholders, Council has now developed a draft Maroondah Vegetation Strategy.
The evidence shows that the Maroondah community highly values our vegetation and the benefits that it provides. It also highlights that biodiversity is in decline, and although our tree canopy across Maroondah remained largely unchanged from 2011 to 2016 - the increase in hard surfaces and declining shrub cover places it at risk of decline in the future.
To help us achieve 'vegetation-based' outcomes for Maroondah, the draft Maroondah Vegetation Strategy proposes several key actions that are designed to protect, improve and add vegetation. These actions include:
Proposed amendments to current planning scheme controls
Funding and advocacy
Specialist research and data analysis
Community education and information sessions
Innovation and collaboration opportunities
With the Maroondah Vegetation Review process now complete, your feedback on the draft Maroondah Vegetation Strategy is important as it will help inform the final Maroondah Vegetation Strategy.
If you require any further information please call Strategic Planning and Sustainability on 1300 88 22 33 or email us at vegetation@maroondah.vic.gov.au

Draft Maroondah Vegetation Strategy has finished this stage
Undertake preliminary community
consultation through Café Consult at the Maroondah Festival to understand the
values community places on vegetation
Research and technical analysis
Draft Maroondah Vegetation Strategy has finished this stage
Three expert studies will
be carried out:
Analysis of habitat and biodiversity change
Analysis of
tree canopy cover change
Review of the effectiveness of the current
planning controls.
As these studies are finalised, reports will be made
available on this page.
Issues and options paper
Draft Maroondah Vegetation Strategy has finished this stage
Will explore issues affecting,
and arising from, vegetation in a growing Maroondah and options to address
their causes in order to protect, enhance, restore and create vegetated
landscapes
We will be seeking community feedback on these options.
A strategy for vegetation
Draft Maroondah Vegetation Strategy is currently at this stage
The strategy will establish
Maroondah’s vision for our vegetated future and Council’s approach to support
this vision whilst meeting Maroondah’s growing housing and infrastructure needs.
The strategy will contain short, medium and long-term initiatives in areas as
diverse as practical vegetation management and conservation, policy and
planning controls, advocacy, education and support to community.
Improving our planning scheme
this is an upcoming stage for Draft Maroondah Vegetation Strategy
Changes to the
Maroondah Planning Scheme will be made which recognise the importance of our
significant vegetation assets, from canopy trees to sites of biological
significance, and the changing pressures on them.
Changes to our planning scheme will help
Maroondah develop towards a greener future. Any planning scheme
amendment arising will be put out on exhibition for community to comment.
