The Draft Waste, Litter and Resource Recovery Strategy was formally endorsed by Council at its meeting on 26 April, 2021.

In 2019 Council undertook consultation with the community to inform the development of a 10 year Waste, Litter & Resource Recovery Strategy. If you would like to hear about who we spoke to, how we engaged the community and the outcomes, the consultation report is provided in the document library, on the righthand side of this page.

During 2020, the waste services team developed a draft transition plan to meet the requirements of the Victorian Government’s new Waste Policy: Recycling Victoria; A New Economy, February 2020 (Recycling Victoria Policy).

The draft transition plan was required in order for Council to apply for a portion of the funding available for assisting Councils to reduce the financial costs of the new services.

The draft transition plan includes details of how Maroondah will transition to the following service requirements of the Recycling Victoria Policy:

  1. Councils to provide households access to a Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) service by 2030. Maroondah intends to introduce this service in May 2023.
  2. Councils to provide households access to a separate glass recycling service by 2027. Maroondah intends to introduce this service following further consultation in June 2027.
  3. The standardisation of bin lids (no date provided). Maroondah will standardise the recycling and garden organics bin lids in May 2023, and the general waste bin in June 2027.

The new draft Waste, Litter & Resource Recovery Strategy 2020 - 2030 provides the strategic framework for these new services. It also provides a plan for reducing waste and litter, increasing resource recovery and educating the community on the importance of avoiding waste.

We are now assessing your feedback on the draft strategy to ensure the proposed outcome areas, targets and actions meet the needs of our community. Once assessed we will present the findings to Council for consideration and prepare the final Waste, Litter & Resource Recovery Strategy 2020 - 2030 for release by the 1 July 2021.
