What is a Community Vision?

A Community Vision describes the longer term hopes and aspirations that a community has for their municipality.

At the City of Maroondah, the Community Vision comprises of two parts – a vision statement and a series of themes – each with their own aspirational statement.

    Why have a Community Vision?

At Maroondah, we have had a Community Vision in place for almost 30 years. The Community Vision has provided a ‘road map’ for the community, Council and other levels of government to partner together to create a future that enhances Maroondah as a great place to live, work, play and visit.

All Victorian councils are required to have a Community Vision under the Local Government Act 2020. The Community Vision must be developed with the local community to describe the community’s aspirations for the future of the municipality for at least the next 10 years.

How does Council use the Community Vision?

The Community Vision guides Council decisions about the Maroondah community.

The Community Vision underpins Council’s Integrated Planning Framework which seeks to ensure all Council activities and resources are aligned in order to meet the aspirations, needs and expectations of the Maroondah community.

What is the current Maroondah Community Vision?

During 2013 and 2014, Council worked with the Maroondah community to develop a long-term vision for our future, looking ahead to the year 2040 and beyond. The community’s future vision is:

Maroondah will be a vibrant and diverse city with a healthy and active community, living in green and leafy neighbourhoods which are connected to thriving and accessible activity centres contributing to a prosperous economy within a safe, inclusive and sustainable environment.

Why do we need a new Community Vision?

The Maroondah 2040 – Our future together Community Vision statement and themes were developed almost 10 years ago and described the hopes and aspirations of the Maroondah community to the year 2040. It’s time to extend that timeframe and develop a vision for Maroondah to the year 2050.

What do we know so far?

Research on future trends provides us with a snapshot of life in 2050. The population growth of Maroondah is likely to return to pre-COVID growth rates. Maroondah will also see a demographic shift, in particular an increase amongst the ageing population, placing additional demands on how services and current and future infrastructure are delivered. The local economy will also shift to incorporate innovative technologies to improve efficiencies and add value in multiple sectors.  There will also be changes in the way we travel, and a need to mitigate and adapt to climate change.
